AGENTS have reported that prices were steady on recent weeks during Thursday's wool sales at the Australian Wool Handlers Centre in Melbourne, while vendors have said they experienced a drop in prices from the same time last year.
Australian Wool Network technical officer Maurice Jolly said Thursday's market was positive.
"We saw good sale results and a positive market in the 17.5-micron and finer wool section," he said.
"While the middle micron (18-22) were basically unchanged on yesterday's market.
"There was also a little bit more inquiry on the crossbred wool, which was fully firm."
At the market, South Australian wool producer Rob Gordon from Glenross, Millicent, sold 170 bales of heavy cutting medium Merino wool, averaging 20 microns.
His top price was 973 cents a kilogram for two 15-bale lines of AAAM (high quality Merino) wool.
Mr Gordon said considering the global financial crisis, he was quite happy with the prices, although they were down on last year.
While Mortlake wool producer Ric Walmsley, Kielli, sold 36 bales of wether and prime lamb wool and achieved 1154c/kg for Super AAM.
