South America looks to SA genetics

South America looks to SA genetics

19 Oct, 2008 05:00 AM
PINE Ridge Suffolks stud breeder Helen Schultz is hoping an invitation to judge at South America's largest sheep and goat show will lead to ongoing sales of embryos to Brazil and Uruguay.

In what she believes in an endorsement for the breed, veterinarian Pedro Nacib Jorge Neto wants semen from champion ram Pamellan Konan as the foundation for more profitable carcases: less of an American-style and shorter in the leg with overall better muscling.

The first order for 100 embryos from Pine Ridge, Strathalbyn, would be collected and frozen at AllStock Dubbo, in New South Wales.

Initially, Dr Neto – who is officially opening AllStock do Brasil Genetica Limited in November or early December – and his business partners have focused on Dorper and White Dorper embryos.

But enquiry for Suffolk genetics led Dr Neto to Pine Ridge Stud and the Pamellan Konan ram – bought from Western Australia by Ms Schultz.

The Pine Ridge principal says there appears to be renewed interest in what Australian studs have to offer following a cessation of trade between Australia and Brazil several years ago because of problems with imported genetics.
