Woonallee bull makes $20,000

18 Feb, 2010 02:50 PM
AN exceptional 21-month-old polled Simmental bull stole the limelight at Woonallee's third annual elite production sale recently, making $20,000.

Bids flew for the opening lot, Woonallee Dimension, before Queensland junior member Josh De Veth, JD Simmentals, Murphy's Creek, became the proud new owner of the 988-kilogram dark red bull.

Dimension possessed both pedigree and performance, bred from one of Woonallee's top donor females Tara Wee and sired by Barana Yeardleigh.

The bull had an eye muscle area of 128 square centimetres and plenty of softness at 7mm and 5mm rib and rump fat.

Two sons of Woonallee Hadau Wee also cracked the magical five-figure mark and were bought by local buyers.

One of the last contenders on the sale topper, Egremont Pastoral Company paid $16,000 for the following lot Woonallee Dateline for their successful Simmental-Poll Hereford commercial crossbreeding program.

Scott and Emily Davidson, Morton Simmental stud, Marcollat, outlaid $10,500 for the highest performing bull of the 2008-drop.

Tasmanians Leah and Nathan Skirving were given a dream start to their Rosehill stud at East Sassafras, taking home Woonallee Devil, the supreme champion exhibit from the 2009 Royal Adelaide Show for $7500.

The Baker family, who have been breeding Simmentals for 38 years, continues to set the benchmark for genetics in Australia and again attracted a nation wide spread of buyers. A few semen packages even sold to New Zealand.

With 73 registered bidders, it was one of the largest crowds seen at the impressive sale complex and ensured Woonallee continued its perfect strike rate of never passing in a bull at an on-property auction.

All 36 Simmental bulls sold for an average of $5834 - up $47 on 2009 - but the loyal following of South East and western Victorian vealer producers were still able to get into 15 bulls for $4500 and under.

The seven Simmental-Angus composite bulls including five weaner bulls also attracted keen competition selling to a $4500 high paid by EM Shields, Irrewarra, Vic.

Multiple buyers included Kangaroobie, Princetown, Vic, which bought three Simmental bulls to $7000 and MJ&LH Fischer, Meningie, took home two Simmental bulls and two of the composites.

The 16 females averaged $3344 and provided some outstanding value buying between $1500 and $7000.

A Western Australian syndicate of the Bulloak Hills stud at Katanning and Topweight stud at Margaret River bought the top-priced female, Woonallee Ashante E202.

The 11-month-old star lot was bred from a full sister to BHR Three Sixes which has had a tremendous impact on the Woonallee herd, and sired by BHR Draco.

Joint purchaser Brad Patterson, Bulloak Hills, said the stud had infused similar South African genetics in the past and was looking to increase this content by flushing the long, deep-bodied female at Farm West in Albany.

Stud principal Tom Baker, who is also Simmental Australia federal president, described the sale as "extremely strong".
