Northern raiders target Mt Gambier cattle

15 Dec, 2008 11:01 AM
Northern NSW and the northern SA maintained their buying inquiry for steers at South Australian store cattle sales, Friday, capturing another sizeable share at the Mt Gambier monthly sale.

With persistent rain falling to encourage local buyers, the long distance haulers met more enthusiastic opposition, primarily on the heavier grown black steers.

Most other sales were fully firm to shade dearer than rates of the previous month.

The yarding of almost 2400 head comprised mostly annual drafts of weaners, while stocks of older grown steers were limited.

A feature of the steer sale, however, was the tight range of prices paid with very few pens of light cattle sold for less than $500 a head, while top-end prices struggled beyond $650, topping at $675 for cattle almost twice the weight of the bottom end drafts.

Heifers met very solid inquiry from butcher-orders and feedlots, while some little grazier support selected some well bred and well grown lines as future breeders.
