Limousin in classy win at SE carcase competition

14 Feb, 2009 04:00 AM
SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S first unled, grassfed carcase competition in many years, the Southern Grassfed Carcase Classic gave producers the opportunity to see exactly how their cattle perform beyond the farm gate.

It was an overwhelming success with 130 entries from 35 producers processed at Teys Brothers, Naracoorte, late last year, and nearly 100 producers at the presentation dinner last Friday night.

The prizes were spread evenly between the cross-bred and purebred entries, but all exhibitors were thrilled by the extensive feedback on the performance of their cattle across the three judging criteria, market specifications, saleable meat yield, and Meat Standards Australia eating quality.

Upper South East Limousin breeders Frank and Carole Burden, Tintinara, took out the pen of three steers with their 16-month-old Limousin-Angus, and Carole said she was pleased to win not only for their Graffoe stud but for the Limousin breed.

"Tonight's win just about dispels the myth Limousin cattle won't finish," she said.

"It is not very often we get the chance to prove what Limousin grassfed cattle can do, so this has been a wonderful way to prove Limousin really is the carcase breed."

The Red Poll breed, which has an enviable reputation in the Royal Adelaide, Show led steer competition continued its winning ways with a steer from Alan and Marilyn Wilson's Oakwood stud, Brentwood, taking out the trade steer/heifer class.

The McFarlane family, Wellington Lodge, Tailem Bend, secured the 300 to 420kg steer class with one of their Te Mania blood Angus weighing 310kg.
