PRICES held firm at Strathalbyn store cattle sale on Friday, thanks to more than 130 registrations for bidding, watched by a big crowd of onlookers.

About 800 head were yarded from mainly local vendors, with some good-quality stock supplied from Kangaroo Island.

Scott Henderson, Parndana, sold 15 July-August 2008-drop Angus/Murray Grey/Poll Hereford cross steers for $525, while 17 baldy heifers sold for $440.

RA&YG Hams, KI, sold 12 Angus steer weaners for $590, while 12 Angus heifer weaners made $420.

Buyers came from far and wide, including Naracoorte, South East, Fleurieu Peninsula and Loxton, as well as local interest.

Elders Strathalbyn auctioneer Darrell Sims said steers were again well sought after, averaging $540-$600, while well-bred stock sold to $675.

Two pens made the top price. Andrew Bailey, Second Valley, sold 10 Angus steers for $675 to Mick Morris, Strathalbyn, while PK Mattner & Co, Ki Ki, sold 15 Shorthorn steers for $675 to T&R.

Quality heifers also sold well, averaging $460, however some lighter numbers struggled to make $400.

But it was one pen of eight well grown Charolais heifer weaners from Shirley Barker, Wistow, that wowed the crowd making $660.

JA&LK Isaacson, Strathalbyn, also sold an impressive pen of four Poll Hereford cross heifers for $490 to Paul Carey, Strathalbyn, while seven Hereford cross steers made $540.

Richard Casley-Smith, Meadows, sold 17 Murray Grey heifer weaners for $425 to Landmark Strathalbyn, while W&B Williams, Coomandook, also sold 12 Murray Grey heifer weaners for $460.

Pregnancy-tested-in-calf and cow and calf units were also on offer, making reasonable prices.

Evan Everest, Inman Valley, sold five Angus cows (run with Angus bull since mid-June) with Angus/Murray Grey CAF for $1010 to Chris Hocking.

Temaru Pastoral, Meningie, sold six Angus cows PTIC with two Angus Hereford CAF for $650, while Adelaide Turbo Services, Currency Creek, sold 13 Angus heifers (run with Willalooka bull from 15/4/09-10/7/09) for $500.
