Blue ribbon weaners draw 10-15c/kg premium

27 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
THE JOHNSON family, Willalooka, was rewarded for holding its on-property Amherst-Moville Blue Ribbon Weaner cattle sale for the first time in three years - selling weaners 10 to 15 cents a kilogram above present market rates.

For the past two-years, cattle had been sold on AuctionsPlus to northern buyers from New South Wales and Queensland, but dry conditions in those states led vendors to switch back to an on-property sale.

The well-bred Angus and Angus cross steers sold for $1.80-$2/kg and averaged $1.90/kg.

Heifers made from $1.65-$1.80/kg, av $1.75/kg.

Vendors Ian and Louise Johnson said they were happy with how the sale went.

"It was good to see plenty of local support and we also had good enquiry from interstate," Ian said.

Spence Dix & Co director Rodney Dix, Keith, said he was thrilled with the results.

"I would particularly like to thank a closely aligned business to our company, Chay & Merrett," he said.

"The company's Owen Merrett bought cattle for Millicent and Penola buyers."

The 441 Amherst steers made $551 a head or $1.80-$2/kg, av $1.90/kg. The 170 heifers averaged $469.

Wittalocka Angus, Willalooka, sold 130 Angus steers at 315kg for $592 or $1.90/kg.

Moville sold 149 steers for $574 or $1.90/kg and 152 heifers for $487.

WR&EM Jackson, Yardookra, Willalooka, sold 208 steers, av $535.
