Another carcase classic win to Warrawindi Limousins

22 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
PENOLA'S Warrawindi Limousins has achieved a remarkable feat, winning back-to-back grand championships in the Southern Grassfed Carcase Classic.

David and Alison Galpin and their children continued their reign over the commercially-orientated competition held at Teys Brothers, Naracoorte, between October 12 and 23 - results were announced recently - with their winning entry a 7-month-old Limousin-Murray Grey steer.

With a score of 89.681 points from a possible 100 including maximum points for saleable meat yield, it had a carcase weight of 198 kilograms and fat cover of 10 millimetres of rump fat and 8mm rib fat.

Mr Galpin said success was even sweeter the second time around, although he admitted than with a wetter winter than last year he was unsure how their four entries would score.

"This is even better than winning grand champion in Adelaide - it is what we are aiming for," he said.

"The ultimate for any business is to produce top-quality, and eating-quality like the steak we ate tonight is what we are striving to produce."

He said the South East provided the perfect environment for grassfed beef, with an 8-9 month pasture growing season compared with many other areas which had a much shorter window of opportunity.

"We grow the best grass in the country, so therefore we can produce the best beef," he said.

In its second year the classic has grown from strength to strength, attracting 210 (0-4 teeth) grassfed steers and heifers from 50 different producers across the SE and western Victoria.

Another Limousin entry, a 15-month-old Limousin-Angus steer from Frank and Carole Burden's Graffoe Limousins at Tintinara took out reserve champion on 86.990 points.
