Progress defies rising costs

SEEDING is under way for the Stone brothers on their 4000-hectare property at Torrita in the heart of the Victorian Mallee.

Les Stone and his brother Frank together, with Les' son Ross, are dry-seeding lupins and are planning a 2000ha wheat and barley program, with a couple of paddocks of lupins being reintroduced after an absence of a few years.

"Our intentions this year are to plant about 1000ha to wheat, 400ha to barley and another 700ha direct-drilled back into last year's wheat stubble," he said.

"With about a third of the land featuring good stands of self-generating medics, we tend to dry-sow the barley into the wheat stubbles so as to not upset the medics too much before the rains come and they start germinating."
