Volatile prices certainty in grain markets

8/08/2008 4:30:00 AM
BIG Northern Hemisphere crops may put pressure on Australian grain prices, according to ABB managing director Michael Iwaniw – but he still sees many positive market signals.

As guest speaker at a Rural Media meeting in Adelaide last Friday, he said the availability of capital was posing a challenge for grain-marketing companies.

"The deregulation of wheat marketing is going to bring dramatic challenges to the way grain is bought from growers," he said.

"No buyer is going to say 'we're going to buy the whole year's supply'."

"We're going to see a lot more volatility in grain prices and a lot more grain unsold.

"The risk of grain pricing that's been carried by ABB or AWB will now be carried by growers."
