SA must hold the line on GM crops: Parnell

01 Feb, 2010 09:58 AM
Greens MLC Mark Parnell has urged the State Government to maintain the moratorium on genetically-modified crops in South Australia.

The call is in the wake of Western Australia's decision to allow GM crops to be grown in WA.

“WA’s foolish decision to open up themselves to GM crops should not influence SA at all,” Mr Parnell said.

“We need to make our own decision about what is best for our State.

“South Australians have made it abundantly clear over many years they don’t want open slather on GM food technology.

“The Greens believe we must continue to embrace and foster our ‘clean and green’ marketing advantage.

“WA’s move actually offers us an opportunity to target markets, like Japan, that continue to reject GM crops.

“The Greens call on the Rann Government to hold the line and publicly commit to a further extension of the GM crop moratorium in SA."

Not a fan of the Greens but in this instance they are on the money. SA is going to open up new lucrative markets that the rest of Australia will be locked out of. The message this ends to the world is that we in SA are very serious about food ethics and that we are listening to the market.

Congratulations on your stance on GM South Australia. It is shameful that the Western Australian government's agriculture minister and FSANZ can be so influenced by Monsanto as to act against the health of the Australian people and the financial state of farmers. May S.A. reap great rewards and continue to stand firm as W.A.'s former Agriculture Minister Kim Chance did. A strong man indeed.

The Greens seem to have their finger on the pulse of the people rather than moneyed GM interests as governments do. Swinburne University's National Science and Technology Monitor (SNSTM) survey just released show that public attitudes about GM haven't changed since 2003, rating at about 3.9 out of 10 (0-uncomfortable, 10-very comfortable). GM is a charade built on the ignorance of consumers which is only possible through poor labelling. As the old saying goes, "you can fool some of the people some of the time but ... " you know the rest.
