HARVEST of the State's estimated 8 million tonne grain crop stalled this week as wet and cool Melbourne Cup day conditions ended a run of hot weather across South Australia.
But Weatherzone meteorologist Matt Pearce said reaping should be full steam ahead for the rest of the week.
"There's no rain in this week's outlook and beyond," he said.
"We're looking at dry conditions and rising temperatures."
Mr Pearce said the State would heat-up over the weekend, with temperatures set to hit the mid-30C degrees.
Harvest started in mid-October, but it could be drawn out this year, with some areas still waiting to start.
Martin Wilkinson, who manages and sharefarms Maro Creek at Snowtown (pictured with sons Glen and Mathew taking a break to listen to the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday) has sown 1300 hectares of wheat, a similar amount of barley and 200ha of oaten hay.
"We got started on harvest last Friday after finishing off the hay," he said.
"On Monday, it was too hot and windy to reap, and then Tuesday it was too cold and damp.
"It's quite frustrating, we just want to get on with it."
Mr Wilkinson said one paddock of barley was reaped on Friday.
"It yielded to our expectations at 2.5 tonnes a hectare," he said.
"Unfortunately, it was meant to make malting grade, but didn't because of some black tips and it was also a bit light."
Wheat harvest was likely to be another three to four weeks away. Mr Wilkinson said he would be disappointed if it went any less than 3t/ha.
"Even with the barley, at the moment we're struggling to find paddocks to reap," he said.
