Price fall, yields cuts as dry drags on

10 Oct, 2008 05:00 AM
AS farmers across the State prepare for this year's harvest, grain prices have taken an untimely dive.

The Chicago Board of Trade's agricultural futures are down across the board.

December 2008 wheat has lost 45cents a bushel to stand at $US5.952/bu; and December 2008 oats lost 20c/bu to be at $US2.94/bu.

In reaction to the falling futures, AWB has cut its estimated pool returns for the 2008-09 AWB eastern and western wheat pools.

South Australian Farmers' Federation Grains Council acting chairman Jamie Smith said the price softening was particularly disappointing given that yield potential had also fallen away.

As a farmer's partner I keep hearing and reading how there is a world shortage of food supplies which will only get worse in the coming years as the world population grows and there will be more hungry mouths to feed. Yet people expect farmers to keep farming - how I ask. This year our input costs have sky rocketed and now we are told that grain prices have taken a dive. The season is turning sour pretty quickly in a lot of areas and that's making it really tough. Farmer's aren't asking for a hand out all we want is a fair price for our grain and livestock etc. A price which reflects the increase in our input cost. If people want farmers to save the starving population then someone had better do something to help the farmers because with the way prices are there are a lot of farmers who are starving.
