 Health regulator raises GM concerns

Health regulator raises GM concerns

18 Jun, 2009 04:00 AM
AUSTRALIA'S long-term food security is being severely compromised by genetically-modified crops and the use of pesticides, according to a former senior health regulator from Canada.

Visiting Australia for the first time, Shiv Chopra was in Canberra this week to launch his new book 'Corrupt to the Core' about what he sees as the major threats to food safety from the use of "genetically-manipulated foods, pesticides and herbicides, hormones and antibiotics in animal production systems".

Far from being the answer to higher yields or a drought-proofing option, Dr Chopra told a forum in Parliament that GM organisms and pesticides, in particular, were a serious threat to public health.

He believes they are behind huge increases in cancer rates, neurological and reproductive disorders and breakdowns in immune systems.

He said rather than being under the watch of the Agriculture Minister, GM crops should be the responsibility of the Health Minister.

Dr Chopra told the forum that claims GM crops produced higher yields were nonsense and untrue.

New figures released this week by Monsanto reveal a four-fold increase in the area being planted to GM canola in Australia this year.

GM canola crops in New South Wales and Victoria will roughly account for 10-15 per cent of the entire canola production this year, with plantings expected to grow from 9500 hectares to 40,000ha.

But Dr Chopra said Australian farmers should not "follow blindly" the US and Canada and believes there is a huge market opening for Australian farmers to reject GM crops and pesticide use.

Dr Chopra said the worst food safety offenders were Canada and the US, but he warned that Australia and NZ were "not far behind".

He said those pushing GM crops were "scientists posing as environmentalists".

Dr Chopra said the greatest issue facing the developed and developing worlds were climate change and carbon emissions, while little attention was being paid to food safety and the security of the food supply.

"GMO seeds require enormous applications of energy, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics and other chemicals to protect their own integrity," Dr Chopra says in his book.

"What problems GMOs are creating most policy makers do not care to know."

He said Australian farmers have done so well in the past, and they would continue to do so if they looked after the consumer.

Gene Ethics organised the tour by Canadian food safety expert Dr Shiv Chopra. His book 'Corrupt to the Core' tells of unsafe foods approved without adequate scientific data, during his 35 years as a senior scientist at Health Canada. "Food safety is a core issue of vital importance for all Australians. It is about the health of your children and the legacy you leave them," says Dr Chopra. "Genetically manipulated (GM) foods are linked to serious health risks. The use of hormones, pesticides and herbicides in industrial agriculture can trigger cancers and neurological disorders. You must ask your governments why they don't protect you from unsafe foods. Australia needs to avoid the food policy mistakes made by Canada and the USA. The politicians and regulators in those countries repeatedly break their own food safety laws under pressure from the powerful food industry and put the health and well-being of people at risk," Dr Chopra says. "Australia and NZ should instead follow the European Union which has much higher standards and stronger laws on food production practices. The EU bans slaughterhouse wastes, hormones and antibiotics from animal production systems, Genetically Manipulated crops are rejected by shoppers and many governments, and synthetic pesticides are being widely phased out. EU standards are the way of the future because removal of these hazards from food makes the food supply organic and safe." "Something is badly wrong when Aldi, a major European-based supermarket chain, takes artificially coloured sweets out of its Australian supermarkets to protect Australian kids but the food regulator FSANZ (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) reconfirms its approval of these poisons. FSANZ must stop rubber stamping these and other foods that scientific evidence shows are unsafe," Dr Chopra concludes.

I applaud Dr Shiv Chopra for courageously exposing what I have already known for years – that there is massive corruption in government, including Australia, where politicians sell out the public to insidious multi-national corporations like Monsanto. If only more Australians were to wake up to the amount of criminal activity occurring in government there would be blood on the streets today.

While Europe bans Monsanto's Mon863 GM corn - FSANZ approves it. While the rest of the world bans alpha-amylase GM corn - FSANZ aproves it. While Austria bans Monsanto's GT73 GM canola - FSANZ approves it. While European supermarkets remove artificial colours from the shelves - FSANZ defends them. So, what exactly are FSANZ there for again? It's always down to the courageous few like Dr. Chopra to publicly say what is blatantly obvious. GM foods - not needed, not wanted, not tested.

Here is a senior scientist with multiple degrees (incuding veterinarian) telling it like it is. His words are a breath of fresh air that might wake us up and remind us that we employ governments to look after our health and saftey. Thankyou Doctor Chopra

It's time we make ourselves aware of the evidence - and recognise that few if any of the GM-pro claims are true and the dangers are many - especially to our reputation and to overseas markets. Let the Truth be known.

Well Done Dr Chopra. The world needs many more like you to educate the innocents and restrict the corrupts. We Aussies have been too busy in making money. Thanks for letting us know what is the reality in food industry. Hope you are doing much more of a mass education in the developing countries in Asia and Africa where the people are becoming guinea pigs for numerous GM Food trial Products. Let there be a revolutionary Eye Opening Movement every where.
