Growers to shape new look GRDC

15 Feb, 2012 11:45 AM
AUSTRALIA'S 28,000 grain growers have the opportunity to shape a new look Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) led by managing director, John Harvey.

Mr Harvey is calling for feedback on a new direction for GRDC, underpinned by six new investment themes. He says the themes represent a fundamental adjustment to GRDC's structure and focus to align with the pillars of successful, profitable grain production.

The GRDC investment themes include:

1. Meeting market requirements

2. Improving crop yield

3. Protecting your crop

4. Advancing profitable farming systems

5. Improving your farm resource base

6. Building skills and capacity.

"In 2010-11 GRDC invested $140 million in more than 900 projects across 230 organisations, so it's essential this investment is focused on delivering technology and practices that will make the biggest difference in your region, on your farm," Mr Harvey said.

"To achieve this, GRDC needs your feedback to develop the five year strategic RD&E plan 2012-2017 'Your GRDC Working With You'.

"This Plan will outline how GRDC will invest your levy, along with the Australian government's contribution, in innovative research, development, extension, communication and commercialisation for the greatest benefit for you."

Mr Harvey encourages growers download the theme consultation document and watch the videos on GRDC's YouTube channel that explain the new direction.

Growers can also call the GRDC on 02 6166 4500 and ask to speak to the relevant theme coordinator:

  • Meeting market requirements - Jody Higgins
  • Improving crop yield - Juan Juttner
  • Protecting your crop - Rohan Rainbow
  • Advancing profitable farming systems - Stuart Kearns
  • Improving your farm resource base - Martin Blumenthal
  • Building skills and capacity - Brondwen MacLean
  • Feedback is open until 19 March and growers can send emails to feedback@grdc.com.au or fax 02 02 6166 4599.

The GRDC is in serious need of reform.

Growers must be given freedom to nominate for a position on the Board and all levy paying growers must be given a vole.

The elections should be based on State boundaries and the number of directors per state to be determined.

Having directors who are directly responsible to grower levy payers would see much greater transparency and give growers ownership.

Levy paying growers having a Board chosen for them by a selection committee with a Ministerial veto is extremely demeaning .

I understand you point jock and agree with it to an extent but the problem is you end up with a popularity contest instead of getting the right person for the job.

There is nothing wrong with a skills based board but we need to find the right method for the nomination process that will weed out professional committee sitters that add no value, like the GRDC chair!!!

The most successful nations in the world use popularity based election systems.

In my experience the most politically corrupt sytems of election are those which use a slection committee to select so called skills based directors.

The elected then become accountable to the selection committee or the body which the selection committee is answerable to, which is usally the Government of the day.

In the case of the GRDC and other so called Industry Organisations such as MLA,they are certainly not accountable to grower levy payers.

Well if thats the case then jock, Julia Gillard is the best person for the job!!! Not only is she the best person for the job but it was the right thing to do in getting rid of the single desk. If popularity get the best results.

The GRDC is yet another classic undemocratic Fascist Corporate Gang purporting to represent the best interest of farmers but who use the gang to peddle their own agendas and kickbacks and elect their buddies onto the executive.

IB you sound silly and uninformed when you prattle on with words like fascist, kickback and gangs!

Without GRDC we all are that little bit worse off and i for one dont want them to go anywhere.

Get some perspective and stop the hyperbole.

Its easy to pull a flower apart petal by petal but you try and put one back together and see how easy it is.

Uninformed corporate. The facts are that GRDC is not accountable to its fee paying farmers, who have no say on policy making or executive election which makes it an uncomplicated, by the book, plain as day

    FASCIST CORPORATE GANG
