CROPS in most areas of South Australia made "quite good growth" during the first half of July, but colder, frosty conditions later in the month saw growth slow considerably, according to the latest crop report from Primary Industries and Resources SA.
Compiled by Rural Solutions SA, the report for July says moderate to heavy rainfall began to contribute stored soil moisture in some parts, however in many areas, particularly on the Eyre Peninsula, the Upper North and the Mallee stored moisture remains low and ongoing rainfall is needed for the remainder of the growing season to mantain crop and pasture growth.
The report says paddock feed is generally adequate for stock requirements and should start to pick up with recent rain and as temperatures rise going into spring.
Cereals sown for feed or crops, which have been grazed, have provided good feed for stock in many areas.
Supplementary feeding is likely to continue in some parts until the weather warms up and pastures start to develop some bulk.
