Elite SARDI dairy bulls to make their mark

11 Nov, 2008 03:51 PM
Two Bulls from SARDI's elite dairy breeding herd have been handpicked by leading international dairy genetics company Semex to see how their offspring shape up.

The bulls, SARDI Argus and SARDI Aspiration, will deliver 2500 doses of semen for storage.

This semen will be used if their first 100 offspring are proven to deliver easy-care daughters that produce top grade milk in voluminous quantities, along with a raft of other favourable traits.

For the next three years, the performance of their first 100 daughters bred into 60 herds, will be studied in fine detail through the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme.

Besides the obvious measures – milk yield and quality - everything from milking speed, calving ease and temperament will be recorded.

If the bulls' offspring shape up, their doses of semen will be taken out of storage and their genes will live on in thousands of progeny worldwide.

SARDI's leader of Livestock and Farming Systems, Professor Simon Maddocks, says since Semex handpicks between 15-20 bulls into their breeding program annually, a strike rate of two from the SARDI elite dairy bulls is impressive.

"These bulls are a good calculated risk and are likely to carry superior genes, stemming from their connection to the world-famous bloodline, Gypsy Grand," Prof Maddocks said.

"It's entirely possible their daughters will be placed in the top 1pc ranking for milk quality, production, conformity, breeding and favourable temperament."

Prof Maddocks says if the bulls surpass strict health tests used in European countries, that their progeny could be in worldwide demand.

The bulls will be housed at Semex’s Total Livestock Genetics Centre, Camperdown, in the Western Districts of Victoria.
