GUERNSEYS were the first dairy cattle to be shown at the Royal Adelaide Show in 1909 so it only seemed fitting that it was the feature breed this year on the 100th anniversary.
Many breeders came out of the woodwork to celebrate the occasion, increasing exhibitor numbers to 14, from 5 in 2008, and more than doubling the number of entries.
One such breeder was Ray Fiebiger, Keywyn, Keyneton, who introduced his grandson Jacob to the world of show handling in the junior classes, while West Australian breeder Colin Gilbert transported over a handful of cows, after winning two supreme champion ribbons at the Perth Show.
Mr Gilbert was rewarded for the effort, taking home an intermediate champion female broad ribbon with three-year-old cow Gilbert Trixie and an honourable mention to 8yo cow Gilbert Telanie.
But in the end the feature breed was all about Glencoe show stalwarts Lyndon and Joyce Cleggett, Brookleigh Guernseys, who picked up a swag of champion trophies including most successful exhibitor.
2008 reserve senior champion female Brookleigh Actions Brunch played no bridesmaid this year, winning the section over stable mate Brookleigh DP Hayley in reserve and honourable mention Brookleigh SC Ugle.
Judge Schnebly said Brunch had the best udder he had seen in the Guernsey ring that day and she paraded it proudly.
It was her style and balance after having three calves that also got her the supreme Guernsey champion female broad ribbon over all other exhibits.
