River Murray Minister fails to attend water rally

1/08/2008 5:01:00 PM
Nearly 5000 people have rallied on the steps of Parliament House in Adelaide today, angry at the inaction by both State and Federal Governments to reduce overallocations and put more water back into the River Murray system.

River Murray Minister Karlene Maywald, Premier Mike Rann, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Federal Water Minister Penny Wong were invited to speak at the rally but all failed to attend.

Contending with cold wind and rain, the protest was held to raise awareness beyond the banks of the River Murray and acted as a plea to the Government to return more water back into the system for environmental flows.

The rally highlighted the growing concerns of a wide range of people from the Lower Lakes up to the Riverland and as far afield as Victoria. There is a growing awareness that we are in this together. This is an Australian problem and it needs a national solution.
