Precision ag network expansion for SA

Precision ag network expansion for SA

22 Feb, 2010 01:30 PM

SOUTH Australian farmers have growing access to competitively priced precision agriculture, with Smart Net Aus's continuously operating reference station network, or CORS, recently expanding its base stations.

The network consists of permanent base stations that communicate GPS information via a central server, which relates data out to individual systems.

CORS offers 2-centimetre accuracy anywhere within the network area.

New base stations have recently been established on the Eyre Peninsula, at Ceduna, Buckleboo and Port Lincoln. There are also base stations in the Mid North and Yorke Peninsula.

Leica Geosystems has undertaken a large scale commercial trial using the Leica mojoRTK auto-steer platform on the CORS network in South Australia.

The company held a dealer training day last Friday at Tanunda.

Leica Geosystems business manager - ag solutions Glenn Clark said while the technology was still relatively new in SA, in Victoria the government-funded CORS network had seen a very good uptake by farmers.

He said that with more area in SA now covered, he was confident the uptake SA farmers would increase substantially, especially leading up to seeding.

"Ultimately we'd like to go right across the State, across to the Victorian border and meet up with the signals coming from there," he said.
