Farming's next generation must value-add

25/09/2008 4:30:00 AM
AGRICULTURE Minister Rory McEwen has called on the next generation of South Australian farmers to "create wealth, not commodities" and focus on business models that make value a priority.

He said they must have vision, and could no longer afford to be concerned with "the B&S and circle work"

Opening Future Farmers Network's 'Think Big – Commodities, Consumers and Value Chains' workshop in Adelaide on Monday, he said the tired catchcry of 'get big or get out' no longer had relevance in modern agriculture. "You must consider value, not volume ... it's only margin that matters," he said.

"So many farmers only wait for the cheque after the product leaves the farmgate."
