Enviro focus at Premier's awards

23 Nov, 2008 04:00 AM
MORE than half the winners were recognised for their strong connection to the environment and production of clean, green produce at the 11th annual Premier's Food Awards on Friday.

Premier Mike Rann said South Australian food producers were leading the way by promoting healthy choices, organic produce and sustainable farming.

"Our winners are innovative and forward-thinking businesses which have done a lot of hard work for this recognition," he said.

The nine award winners include a producer with a focus on biodynamic farming, another who is developing strategies to help farmers cope better with drought and a producer who has introduced a new range of healthy fruit snacks for school children.

Mr Rann also acknowledged the KPMG Young Leader Award winner George Ujvary, 33, who is managing director of family-owned SA business Olga's Fine Foods.

"Dr Ujvary is heavily involved in expanding his niche gourmet range, particularly developing healthy low-fat, gluten free products, and so is also focused on keeping quality SA produce front-and-centre," he said.

Mr Rann was pleased the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market also picked-up the Rural Solutions SA Services to Industry Award, describing it as "a great example of taking good food to the people and highlighting the value of locally-produced food and healthy lifestyles".

"The market provides a unique business incubation and marketing service to SA food businesses by exposing them to more than 3000 customers every week," he said.

"It also encourages families to come together, businesses to communicate with each other and their customers and has really given a lot of opportunities to a primary industry sector that is going through some tough times."

Other award winners included: Export Award winner Almondco; Environmental Sustainability Award winner AgriExchange; Workforce Development Award winner B.-d Farm Paris Creek; South Australian Food Industry Hall of Fame inductee Drake Supermarkets; SA Research & Development Institute Innovation Award winner Robern Menz; New Product Award winner Humbugz Honey; Food Adelaide Value-adding Award (less than 15 full-time employees) winner Tutto Pasta; and Food Adelaide Value-adding Award (greater than 15 FTEs) winner Richard Gunner's Fine Meats.
