THE South Australian Environment and Conservation Minister has toured one of the State’s most significant environmental sites with the Coorong and Mallee Natural Resources Management group.
Minister Paul Caica joined 40 representatives from the South Australian Murray Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board and the South East Natural Resources Management Board as well as four regional NRM groups and local and state government representatives on a day-long, 300- kilometre tour from the Coorong Wilderness Lodge to Kingston.
Mallee and Coorong NRM group chairman Allan Piggot said the tour was designed to give the Minister a first-hand view of the work undertaken by the groups in one of Australia’s most significant sites.
“I think most people recognise the fragility of the Coorong and its importance so we brought together a group containing many of the region’s natural resources managers,” he said.
“Our aim was to provide a firsthand experience of the Coorong and we did that by showing the group what a significant place it is and by letting them hear the story of the Coorong from locals.”
The group heard from fishermen, farmers and Aboriginal people about the history of the area, the state of the environment, and ways in which the Coorong could be restored to its former glory.
