Big gains for live sheep trade ahead

15 Feb, 2012 05:47 AM
LIVE sheep exports are projected to increase by 24 per cent by 2016 to reach 3.1 million head.

While live sheep exports hit a low last year of just 2.458m head, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) is tipping a big jump in exports on the back of growth in the national flock.

MLA’s Robert Barker tipped live sheep exports would increase by 6pc this year alone to 2.6m head.

While Kuwait is expected to remain the largest single destination, with about one million head projected for 2012, sheep are also headed for Qatar and Bahrain (400,000 each) as well as Turkey and Jordan, although Oman is set to benefit from the largest increase of Australian sheep exports with 50,000 head, up 22pc from 2011 levels.

MLA’s sheep projections noted exports to Saudi Arabia – traditionally one of the largest markets for Australian live sheep – had been in decline for the past five years.

This comes as a result of competition from east African nations including Sudan and Somalia; as such, just one Australian shipment of 24,000 head left for Saudi Arabia in 2011.

MLA said implementation of the Export Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) set to be implemented from the start of March would play a key role in export volumes for 2012.

MLA would say the trade is headed for an increase.

Cant have farmers knowing the truth that live export is dying..so they use PR to boost support.

They do talk crap.

The usual rubbish from MLA, the profiteers from egregious animal abuse. Any farmer involved in this abhorrent animal trafficking is as complicit in the crutality as the savages to which they send their animals. And you want the 'city country divide' to change? Forget it, you are the most parasitic sector of the Australian community.

I'm not so sure about that Nicky. As far as parasites go, I reckon you'd take some beating!

"And you want the 'city country divide' to change? Forget it, you are the most parasitic sector of the Australian community."

Nicky, unless you live on fresh air, I'd suggest you have a look at where the fresh fruit and vegetables on the supermarket shelves come from.

Live export trade will continue forever, let's ban the veggie pullers, how cruel is that!

Wrong, Nicky. I would rather sell my produce to foreigners than sell it to twisted perverts like you any day.

The joke is that you have the gall to claim that you speak for urban Australia when the reality is that you are nothing but a fringe freak show.

If you had an ounce of moral integrity you would gather up all your vegan mates and settle in one place so we can see what a disaster your ideas would be if they were ever implemented.

Note the nasty personal comments from pro live exporters. Goes without saying that those with their hands out, those that sell their animals at any price- cos it isnt them enduring a journey and death beyond hell.. would be nasty.

DEATH TO LIVE EXPORT- cant come soon enough.

Australia has had enough of the shame.

Well of course you would Ian Mott. Your lot dont care about what happens to animals so long as your wallet gets fatter and fatter. Clear demonstration of greed if ever there was one.

And you people dare suggest you care...cant stop laughing.

@ban lex , first your lot insult us then you try to throw defense back in our face. Not to hard to see you for what you are:....

As for GF, there is a big difference between lining your pockets and survival! You should shold get out more, or doesn't the institution grant you weekend leave?

Oh dear. The comments on here eluding to banning live exports, whatever the cost, are clearly living in a delusional, made-up utopia. I have no problem hearing all sides of an argument, as long as the facts are presented in support of moral question. Yes 'Greedy farmers', livestock producers do care about their animals. The urban/rural divide exists because 'Green' groups created it as a means to push an agenda. There is no logic presented at all, just opinion. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of your moral brain-washing based on fear.
