Grainger returned as Cotton Australia chair

12/08/2008 8:00:00 PM
Mungindi cotton grower, Joanne Grainger, has been returned for a second term as Cotton Australia chair at the company's annual general meeting on the Gold Coast today.

Mrs Grainger stood unchallenged and will continue to steer the organisation through the challenging times ahead, posed by the continuing drought and low water allocations.

She will be supported by deputy chair, David Robinson.

The proposed model for merging Cotton Australia and the Australian Cotton Growers Research Association was discussed at the meeting, with an opportunity for growers to provide feedback.

"The general feeling was one of support for the proposal, with an opportunity now to strengthen grower representation, creating a new organisation to address current and future challenges," Mrs Grainger said.

"A merger committee will progress the detail of the proposed model, ahead of extraordinary and special general meetings scheduled for late November to formally approve the merger," she said.

Moree cotton grower Lyndon Mulligan was also elected to the Cotton Australia Board, replacing long-time director Mike Carberry, a cotton grower from the Namoi Valley.

Mr Mulligan said he hopes to provide a strong voice for cotton growers on the peak grower body, particularly in light of the possible merger.

"Now is a good time for the industry to review its leadership and grower representation and I'm keen to look for ways to better service growers," he said.

"I'd like to act as a link between cotton producers and the organisation to make sure growers are well represented by a strong proactive body."
