It’s being reported as the biggest wind farm to be built as yet in the southern hemisphere.
Costing over $1.2 billion, the proposed wind farm will be build in cattle country near Kingaroy, in south-east Queensland.
A comprehensive environmental assessment has been undertaken and has determined the project will have minimal impact on the local flora and fauna population.
Established on predominantly cleared cattle grazing country, it will cover about 12,000 hectares and will generate up to 1.7 million megawatt hours of electricity each year - enough to power approximately 320,000 homes.
Coopers Gap Wind Farm Pty Ltd has already submitted its proposal to develop this huge project, to be known as Coopers Gap Wind Farm, consisting of up to 252 wind turbine generators.
The 252 wind turbines will be approximately 135m overall in height, with a rotor diameter of 104 metres.
It is expected to reduce green house gas emissions by up to 2.2 million tonnes a year.
Coopers Gap Wind Farm Pty Ltd is a joint effort by by Investec Bank (Australia) Limited and Windlab Systems, a CSIRO-established company that specialises in wind resource estimation.
Any remnant vegetation areas located within the area will be avoided during project construction, the company says.
