Big rain hits Qld; warnings of flash floods

30 May, 2008 11:04 AM
A severe weather warning has been issued for damaging winds, heavy rain and dangerous surf for southern Capricornia, Wide Bay and Southeast Coast districts, with good falls promised for coastal farmers.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, rain will hit a large area from the south-east region to the Wide Bay, Capricornia and Sunshine coasts.

But importantly for broadacre farmers, isolated showers are forecast for areas further west.

The Bureau says that through the weekend the east coast low will sink south with a peak rainfall overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning for the south east coast, with showers continuing further west.

Later on Sunday the east coast low and rain band will slip into NSW with showers remaining over SE Qld, and by Monday a new upper level low will move into the SE bringing showers and thunderstorms.

The system has already brought good rain to some agricultural areas, with the Bureau recording overnight falls of 35mm in Bundaberg, Gayndah 20mm, Gympie 30mm, Maryborough 42mm, Kingaroy 13mm, and further west Dalby 5mm and Miles 6mm.

South of the border Casino received 21mm, Lismore 27mm, Evans Head 32mm, and Coffs Harbour 10mm.
