Socceroos back in Brisbane

20/08/2008 3:12:19 PM

Brisbane has been confirmed as the venue for Australia's first home match in the next round of World Cup qualifiers, with the Socceroos to meet Qatar on October 15.

The round four clash will be played at Suncorp Stadium, temporarily renamed "Brisbane Stadium, Milton" in accordance with the regulations of the Asian Football Confederation.

Australia's other AFC qualifier opponents are Bahrain, Japan and Uzbekistan.

The Socceroos need to finish in the top two of their group to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

"Playing in the World Cup is an ambition shared by the entire nation and we're looking forward to a full house and vocal support from Queenslanders to help the players on the journey to South Africa," Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley said.

Speaking after the friendly clash with South Africa in London overnight, Australia coach Pim Verbeek welcomed the opportunity to return to Brisbane after facing Iraq in the same stadium in June.

"We will have to work hard to achieve qualification but playing in the World Cup is something every player wants to do and they know what they need to do to get there," Verbeek said.

Australia met Qatar twice in the previous qualifying round and defeated them both times.

Tickets go on sale to members of 'My Football Family' on August 26 and to the general public three days later.
