Corby not into partying: friend
Corby not into partying: friend
20/05/2008 12:28:57 PM
A close friend of Mercedes Corby, the sister of convicted drug smuggle Schapelle Corby, has told a Sydney jury her friend was not the partying type and did not approve of drugs.Giving evidence on behalf of Mercedes Corby at her defamation action against Seven Network Ltd, Nicole Rae Kelso said she did not see her friend take drugs at Ms Kelso's 2002 hen's party.Ms Corby's former friend, Jodie Power, has told the NSW Supreme Court jury she and Ms Corby had speed in the toilets at the Gold Coast races during the first stage of the party. But Ms Kelso said she had cocaine with Ms Power in the toilets, that Ms Corby was not present and she did not see any speed.Ms Kelso said Ms Corby, whom she had known for 17 years, was not into partying and did not approve of her taking drugs.Under cross-examination from Tom Hughes QC, for Seven, she said she was a "little shocked" when told Ms Corby had admitted taking ecstasy."Everyone experiments, everyone has tried something once or twice, I am sure you have," she told Mr Hughes."Speculation is always interesting," he replied. "I am not in a position to respond."Mercedes Corby is suing Seven, claiming she was defamed in interviews with Ms Power which were aired in February last year. She says she was falsely portrayed as a drug dealer and smuggler in the broadcast pieces.Ms Kelso told Ms Corby's QC, Stuart Littlemore, her friend was a good, honest person and she had never known her to be involved in drugs in any way.She said she had been friends with Ms Power and still cared for her well-being.However, she said: "I don't care for what she is doing".Ms Power told the jury that at the second stage of Ms Kelso's hen's party - in a Surfers Paradise penthouse - she and Ms Corby snorted cocaine. But Ms Kelso said she herself had some and so did Ms Power, but Ms Corby was not in the room when they took it.Asked about a photograph taken at the party, that also showed a plate with lines of cocaine on it, she said the women were taping "glow in the dark" stickers onto their nipples.Schapelle Corby is serving 20 years in a Bali prison after being convicted of smuggling 4.1kg of cannabis into Indonesia inside a bodyboard bag in 2004.The defamation hearing continues before Justice Carolyn Simpson.
